This Is My Joystick! are back at the BAFTAs for the second time of asking, and once again, Bryony will be in attendance to provide a live feed on the events and give us some live coverage!
You can follow all the action in this article, and you won’t even have to refresh the page!
22.27
Right; signing out. Thank you so much for reading; I’ll post a full update (interviews etc) in the next couple of days. Stay tuned; I will be back.
Congrats to all the winners, commiserations to the losers. Congrats especially to Quantic Dream for their three awards, and to BioWare for their Best Game award.
22.22
Peter Molyneux looks so touched he might cry.
22.14
OK; the Fellowship, which is going to Peter Molyneux. It is being presented by Ben Kingsley, who of course worked on Fable. Unfortunately I can’t really hear what he is saying! Dang!
22.11
Unless I am being very dense, that is the only award they won. But they thoroughly deserve it. I love that game; sorry, but I do.
22.10
Assassin’s Creed; Brotherhood, FIFA 11, Heavy Rain, LIMBO, Mass Effect 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2.
The winner is… Mass Effect!!!
22.06
Here comes the big one. No real surprise that I want it to be Mass Effect 2, I just love that game. Sorry, but I do.
22.04
Heavy Rain is the only game to win more than one award; they currently have 3.
22.04
Heavy Rain wins. I can’t say I am surprised.
22.03
Story BAFTA up next; a category I care about. Story is important, m’kayyy? Alan Wake, BioShock 2, Black Ops, Fallout; New Vegas, Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2… The winner is…
21.58
Need for Speed wins! Wow!
21.56
Mulitplayer Award; Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Halo; Reach, Need FOr Speed, Starcraft II. I feel this is going the way of the Black Ops…
21.53
F1 2010 gets the BAFTA!
21.52
Sports Award; F1 2010, FIFA 11, Football Manager 2011, Gran Turismo 5, International Cricket 2010, Pro Evolution Soccer 2011. Sports… not my field. Too much like hard work.
21.50
Super Mario Galaxy 2! Well I never.
21.48
My choice would be Mass Effect 2, of course, but no doubt it will be Heavy Rain. I mean, Heavy Rain was good, but it did annoy me. But I am known for being pretty picky when it comes to games.
21.47
Gameplay Award up next; Assassin’s Creed, God of War III, Heavy Rain, LIMBO, Mass Effect 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2.
21.46
They do look pleased.
21.44
The winner is… Twang! Well done That Game Studio.
21.40
Fair enough. It is very pretty. Not really my style, but I can’t argue with that.
21.39
God of War III. OK.
21.38
Twitter has crapped out on me again.
21.38
Artistic Achievement; Assassin’s Creed, Black Ops, God of WarIII, Heavy Rain, LIMBO, Mass Effect 2. Will nail my colours to the post and say I thought Assassin’s Creed was gorgeous. LIMBO looks fab, too. The winner is…
21.35
No one is sweeping the board this year.
21.35
The winner is… Civilisation V. I can’t claim to have played that one. Sorry, but well done.
21.32
Up next is… Strategy Game; Civilsation V, Fallout New Vegas, FIFA Manager 11, Napoleon Total War, Plants vs Zombies, Starcraft II; Wings of Liberty….
21.30
Of course I am delighted for them. My gracious loser face needs working on.
21.29
The winner is; Heavy Rain. Bah.
21.28
Having been charmed by Russell Shaw earlier, I hope Fable III gets it, but I won’t cry if it is Mass Effect, either.
21.27
Original Music; Alan Wake, Fable III, Heavy Rain, James Bond 007; Bloodstone, Mass Effect 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2…
21.25
I didn’t vote for that one.
21.24
The winner is… voted by over 110,000 people…. (including me)… Call of Duty; Black Ops.
21.22
Don’t let me down, public… do us gamers proud with your taste…
21.21
GAME Award, voted by the public; too many nominees to list…
21.19
Cut the Rope.
21.17
Handheld award is up next; Cut the Rope, God of War; Ghost of Sparta, Lego Harry Potter, Prof Layton, Sonic Colours and Super Scribblenauts. The winner is… wait for it…
21.16
Irony is the gentleman collecting the Use of Audio is so tall he is too far away from the mic for it to pick up his voice.
21.14
… Battlefield Bad Company 2.
21.12
Use of Audio Award; Alan Wake, Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield Bad COmpany, Black Ops, DJ Hero, LIMBO… and the winner is….
21.09

And the BAFTA goes to…
21.07
Social Network Game up next; Bejeweled Blitz, Farmerama, FIFA Superstars, My Empire, Zoo Mumba, Zuma Blitz.
21.05
Heavy Rain! I told you!
21.04
But then so was Kinnectimals… but the winner is…
21.03
This SHOULD go to Heavy Rain, however much it annoyed me… It WAS innovative.
21.03
Tecnical Innovation; AC Brotherhood, Black Ops, Halo, Reach, Heavy Rain, Kinnectimals, Super Mario Galaxy 2.
21.01
That involves getting off your arse and moving, so I don’t have a lot of experience with that one…
21.01
And the winner is… Kinnect Sports.
20.58
Family up next; Dance Central, Kinnect Adventures, Kinnect Sports, Kinnectimals, Lego Harry Potter, Toy Story 3.
20.57
Well done guys!
20.56
Who will win….? It goes to… Assassin’s Creed; Brotherhood! My choice too!
20.53
First Award; Action. Assassin’s Creed, Battlefield, Bioshock, Black Ops, God of War, or Halo; Reach…
20.49
“How many more hours do I need to play before I get to the sex? Did you lie to me”?
20.49
He does tell us that the next FIfa game needs zombies. ALL games need zombies…. like a hole in the head!
And “WHERE IS THE SEX IN MASS EFFECT 2?”
20.47
I wish Dara O’Briain would speak a little slower… sorry I can’t pick up what he is saying. Bad start.
20.44
Over serveral false starts…. we are OFF!
20.41
Bear with me…
20.37
But he is funny. He says he can slag off any of the guests games as he paid £39.99 for them.
20.36
Welcome onstage Dara O’Briain (sp). Man he speaks quickly.
20.35
Please turn off your mobile phones. Fire exits are that way. –>
20.33
Right. I think we are off.
20.30
Annnnyyyyy minute now……
20.27
Oh; we might be about to actually see some awrds handed out!!! Is this the moment of truth(s)?
20.20
Oh; we got given a MAHOOSIVE report on the games industry and the state of it. I will read it because it looks really interesting, and if you are all very good I’ll do a write up of that. But that won’t be for some time. It isn’t QUITE as long as The Lord of the Rings, but I’d say it is close.
20.13
Some of us have trains to catch!
20.09
I did take a few pictures, too; and will post when I have a bit of time.
20.06
Oh; the guy from Red Dwarf and Scrap Heap Challenge (Robert Llewellyn, of course) also chatted for a while, but I’ll be darned if I either can remember right now what he was saying, or if I have time to write it up, but I will get to it, faithful readers.
20.02
C’mon; pass the gongs out already!!!
19.59
Going to also make the point that last year, other than in-front-of-camera types, I was the only woman in the room. (There were about two others.) This year… 5 women who are not in-front-of-camera types. This is a good thing, I think. Though part of me hates myself for making that observation. Gender doesn’t matter.
19.53
Once again; sorry for typos. I am hanging my head in shame as I type… which could explain some of them…
19.52
Blak Ops seems to be the favourite for the Multiplayer award, although someone has just tweeted (Echofon still works) that he is currently experiencing connection problems. Ominous? You decide.
19.51
Mood from aroubd the room is that there isn’t any one stand out game this year, so it seems unlikely that anyone will sweep the board, although the ‘room’ was wrong last year. Everybody thought Modern Warfare would win everything… *tumbleweed*.
For what it is worth, I would like Russell Shaw or Jack Wall (Fable III or Mass Effect 2) to get the music award. I also think Assassin’s Creed ought to get the Artist Award. I’ll probably go against the grain and say I hope Heavy Rain does not get the gameplay award. Nice idea… that got old quickly. There. I said it.
19.47
Is Twitter broken? Ain’t that just fab. Good timing, Whale of Fail.
19.45
I’m racking my brains to remember if there was anyone/thing else of note from the red carpet to tell you about; getting out my dictaphone right here, right now would not be convenient.
I will take this moment to apologise for any typos; long fingernails, typing quickly etc do not make for easy typing.
19.43
There’s a circle game of something DS going on at the table next to me, but I can’t figure out what the game is. It is quite fast. And colourful.
19.41
The big guns are setting up their big cameras now. I call them ‘big guns’ but they are just like us; but with bigger cameras.
19.39
Briefly eavesdropped on the Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed guys. No they aren’t giving anything away about their next game. Bah humbug! But one did say it was like waiting for Christmas; we don’t like to spoil surprises. Good answer.
19.32
The whole event seems to be a lot better organised than last year, as well. I feel like we are all being looked after just that little bit better. Last year was awesome, but it nearly killed me.
19.30
Oh, someone recognised me from last year; as the Uncharted girl. Yeah, that’ll be me.
19.26
I am also far less knackered than last year. All round that makes me feel quite happy.
19.24
Er…. Oh ok; Ben Kingsley got my respect (actually he had it anyway, but he went up a peg or two) by telling us that he isn’t a gamer; he is purely a performer. I will write up his words in detail later, but he was talking about acting for games as the same as acting on stage, etc; you are just performing. He also pointed out that there are of course different challenges/aspects, but essentially what he does is act. He didn’t try to fawn to the industry.
19.19
Where was I? Also had the pleasure, and I mean PLEASURE of chatting briefly to Russell Shaw, who I am genuinely a fan of. I will tell you, in detail what he said when there is more time (I am a tease, aren’t I?) but he had some interesting things to say about the different challenges that composing for a video game poses. HERO.
19.14
Something I did notice; fewer people got up my nose this year. Either the people are nicer, I am mellowing in my ever increasing age (my birthday is next week, by the way) or my higher access clearance pass gains me some more respect.
19.12
I spent quite a lot of time listening in to him (and others) and it is (hopefully) all stored on my dictaphone, so I will be less brief later. I promise.
19.11
Oh; Danny Wallace; an old friend of the site; he wishes us well. He also praised us for our personal feel, which is very charming of him.
19.09
Who else was there…?
19.08
I also asked The Stig (yes, The Stig) what he is up to at the moment; answer was that he is preparing for the Le Mans 24hr race; which is pretty cool. Not something I’d watch in totality, but respect to those that can do it. Race, that is.
19.06
Who was next? uh… OK; random thoughts will follow.Oh; I interviewed The Stig. I also called him The Stig; I meant to call him Ben COllins, but hey, what can you do? He is here to present Best Action game, and like a true pro wouldn’t tell me who he wanted to win.
19.03
OK; Tyger Drew; he told me he likes FPS games, and will play the campaign through once before launching into the Multiplayer aspect. Par for the course, but he was charming.
19.01
Right. I have food. Result.
18.58
Back in a moment; food has arrived. Don’t go anywhere.
18.57
First person I had the pleasure of meeting was Tyger Drew-Honey; one of the kids from Outnumbered. And he is all grown up, or so I thought.
I began asking him if he played games; seemed a good place to start. He told me that he does, and that he had to be picked up from school early to be here tonight, (and I have to say; I thought he looked too old and mature for school) but he managed to get an hour in anyway. What was he playing? Fallout; New Vegas.
18.53
So far I have been meeting some of the great and the good from the industry and beyond, and in the short time between now and the ceremony, I will try to give you an idea of what was sa. Thank goodness for a dictaphone!
18.51
OK, so the nominees for Best Game BAFTA 2011; Assassin’s Creed; Brotherhood, FIFA 11, Heavy Rain, LIMBO, Mass Effect 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2.
The winner is…
00.13
That was Andy by the way. [Andy]
00.09
I’m just running some tests here, making sure everything is running smoothly before the event starts.
00.04
Welcome to our Live feed! Bryony will be taking charge here shortly before the event, so make sure you stay on this page for all the news! [Andy]
