As outed by Game Informer, It's being rebooted for consoles and is coming out Autumn this year.
This has me much more excited than the stupid FPS they're trying to make (which, I have a theory, will end up being cancelled)
Anyone else play the original many moons ago?

Re: X-Com Enemy Unknown
Nope so I have no idea why everyone is/was getting excited/annoyed about the new game coming out! I think it's kinda like Syndicate isn't it; old fans want a shiny version of the traditional game whereas new interested parties want something fresh and contemporary.
As far as I understand X-COM was a strategy title? To be honest the genre has died on it's arse in consoles and with console gaming being the current cash cow it's no surprise they tried to mash it into an FPS (which is also a current cash bessie). It's an understandable move but I can understand how it'd irk fans. I can image getting vexed if someone picked up Broken Sword and turned it into a purely action title.
I'm not sure if the FPS will be cancelled but unless it has/had something really special to offer it is/was pretty fucked from the start. I mean Singularity is an alright game but flopped because it's base FPS side couldn't hold a candle to COD and it's USPs just weren't up to scratch. I could see X-COM going a similar way.
It it's a pure reboot however I think it'll face different issues. The genre is a bit outdated and they'd need to give it a shot in the arm if they wanted it to appeal to anyone but old fans. Also putting out a strategy title on consoles is risky; most disc-based RTS's have failed to make big sales and with the economy as it is one duff game can often spell studio closure. On the flipside if they do it right it could be the start of a popularity resurgence. Time will tell I suppose.
