Re: Prometheus
Planning to see this tomorrow. I've seen a lot of bad reviews but I'm going to remain optomistic! I'll be back with my thoughts.
EDIT: Just saw it. Definitely could have been better. It was passable but I never was completely immersed in the story. I never forgot that I was watching a movie or that the actors were playing a part.
I had more fun rewriting it in my head afterwards. I won't go into detail so as not to spoil but my recommendation is waiting for disc release.
2nd EDIT: (lol) Ya know, I just thought I'd retract a bit of the way I came off. It's a good movie. Sometimes I find I don't like a movie the first time I see then I love it after the second. I think I went in expecting too much and it was a bit overwhelming. Too much to take in.
I just felt that nothing was set up until two scenes before it was needed. Also, hardly any character development. I just think they had so many potential plot points, a lot of things went underutilized.

Re: Prometheus
Watched this the other night thought was pretty good not better than aliens itself as not enough action but still a steady 7/10.

Re: Prometheus
it's funny really I cut a massive chunk out of this month's podcast where we talked - rather off topic - about prometheus and the alien quadrilogy. The end of the film isn't the start the alien, not by a long shot, wrong planet for a start... unfortunately it was a serious "meh" ending. The characters in the film weren't real (believable) people, not like they were in Alien and yes Michael Fassbender was the true star of the movie by far with an amazing performance. I enjoyed the majority of the film though and I want to watch it again soon to pick up on why it's so pants. I'm sure I will get to the end and go "meh" again though.

I have to say, although I know where you're coming from - I think I was fortunate in that I went in with it not thinking about the Alien franchise at all. The only thing I did have rattling around my head was the Ridley Scott connection. I had avoided as much as possible after the first trailer, because I think movie marketing in general is so bloody heavy-handed these days that a lot of the surprise and magic is sucked out of most films before you've even got your ass on the seat!
I'm really looking forward to the 3D Prometheus Blu Ray landing on my door mat in a few weeks though - it's got a shit-load of extras, (Ridley Scott certainly doesn't cheat people where his movie releases on Blu Ray are concerned!) including deleted scenes like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLgw0jeu_-c (I'll not embed it in case anyone happens to read this thread who hasn't seen the movie yet)
PS: I agree with you Neil H about the ending - I thought the "surprise reveal" was heavy-handed and unneeded frankly. Although I still enjoyed the film overall, that final scene kinda soured the whole experience for me to be honest.

Re: Prometheus
I agree with you Paddy, the last ten mins was the problem. I fear it was an edit specially to tie-in a second and third moive into the prometheus trilogy. I avoided all the trailers before going to see it and it didn't disappoint. Definite watch again movie.

I liked the final standoff with the Engineer and Shaw, I thought that was great - but the whole "reveal" thing? Nah...not so much.

Re: Prometheus
I'd forgotten we talked about Prometheus! I really enjoyed it, although upon reflection a lot of the criticisms aimed at it were fair. Bit part characters weren't as well developed as in Alien and Aliens, a lot of unanswered questions (which I guess will be answered in subsequent films) and I thought the storyline towards the end did run a bit too close to the Alien films in terms of how it played out. I do like a bit of a muse on the origins of life and so on though, at the very least it was a thought provoker.
I have a number of other things I'd say but they contain spoilers so I won't go there...
As for the Alien Quadrilogy, I'll repeat what I said in the podcast, damn you Alien 3!

Re: Prometheus
So my family decided to stream Prometheus rather than get the DVD. Any extras I missed out on? If it's spoiler-ish feel free to PM me.
I have to agree that the movie is way better the second viewing. I make the mistake of having high expectations the first time, something I try not to whenever possible.
