Racing games are one of my favourite genres, there is nothing quite like getting hold of a beast of a car and racing around a track with your mates. One thing that always happens when I get together with my brother-in-law is that we have some races on whatever title and it’s always a battle. Not a battle on the track as you might expect, as our battling comes at its most ferocious when we are taking turns. Let me explain.

When it comes to racing games I am very specific on how I have the camera set. I like to be in one of two views; the first of which is the cockpit view and the second is the bumper view. Depending on what type of racing game, the handling or simply because of what views are on offer can change which view I opt for, but more often than not the cockpit view is the way to go. I find either of those a hell of a lot easier to drive with, and games like GTA always made me struggle at first as you couldn’t change the view to a cockpit view. For me it also provides added realism and makes me feel like I’m actually in a car. My brother-in-law has a very different approach; he likes to use one of the far cams and says this is the better view because you can see the entire car. He has road-tested both my preferred views before and found that he couldn’t do either, despite the fact he drives in real life (I don’t). I put this test to a few of my mates and it seemed that they all went for the far cam as well.

After debating the subject on several occasions with friends, and being dubbed a freak of nature for opting for (what I find easy) the hardest driving view, I am still clueless as to what is the better driving position. The way I see it is that if you’re driving in a real car, you’re not floating 20ft above while driving your missus down the motorway, you’re sat next to her getting moaned at for taking a wrong exit.
