Announcement: This Is My Joystick to close soon

It’s with a heavy heart I announce that, after seven years, This is my Joystick will be soon be halting its content production. We have a few outstanding pieces to go live over the next couple of weeks and we also have a fitting sign-off planned, but after that, the site will live on as an archive only.

The reasons are many and complicated, and the decision has been tough to make, but it predominantly boils down to the way that independent and enthusiast games coverage – and the culture around it – has changed since the site’s inception back in 2009.

While we never really hit the heights that we dared to dream of at the beginning, as owner and curator I take a lot of personal pride in the work we’ve produced together over the years. A lot of talented individuals have passed through our ranks, honed their skills with us and gone on to various successes, and I extend my sincerest thanks to everyone that devoted their time to our cause, no matter how small.

FIFA 14 Announced

There are three things in life that are absolute certainties: death, taxes and another annual FIFA instalment  So there were few surprises when EA announced FIFA 14 this week. Sure, EA are getting a lot of flak at the moment and another football sequel is never going to win them any new fans; but if we are all honest, it must be quite hard to re-package and improve what is essentially just a football game, and usually they do pull it off.

Apparently there are 65 million games of FIFA played each week, so they must be doing something right. A petition to EA recently called for FIFA 14 to feature female players, so it will be interesting to see if there is an official response now they are in full rebuilding image mode.

What can they possibly offer the football-loving masses this year that they haven’t seen before?

Help us win a People’s Choice Wales Blog Award

This Is My Joystick have once again been shortlisted for Best Technology Blog at the Wales Blog Awards 2012. That victory will be determined by judge’s vote on September 20th.

This time, however, that’s not the only award at stake, but we’ll need your help in order to try and do the double.

This Is My Joystick longlisted for three Wales Blog Awards

Following on from last year’s success, it is a great priviledge to inform you that This Is My Joystick has been longlisted for three Wales Blog Awards this year!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at TIMJ!

Hello folks! As you well know, tomorrow is Annual Gift-Giving Day Eve, and the day after that will be Annual Gift-Giving Day itself, where you exchange presents, eat and drink until you can’t eat and drink no more, and our staff will be no exception.

With that, the site closes its doors to regular content over the festive period, but fear not if you’ve got nowhere to go, we’ve still got plenty to keep you entertained.

The last part of our epic 24 day Advent Calendar Giveaway will still go live tomorrow, and on the 30th and the 31st of December we’ll be unleashing our annual ‘Year in review’ articles; two collaborative articles offering our opinions on the most disappointing games of the year, and then our picks for ‘Game of the Year’ respectively, before throwing both open to a forum poll for you guys. Of course, you’ll still find many of our regular reprobates slinking around the forums to keep you going with engaging chat until we return.

Normal content output will recommence on the 9th of January, when we’ll all be refreshed and ready to take on the new year which, providing the world doesn’t end, will be another important step in the development of your favourite gaming website… No, not them! Us!

Until then, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at This Is My Joystick!

This Is My Joystick have been longlisted at the Wales Blog Awards!

The longlist (more like the bloody enormous list!) has been released for the 2011 Wales Blog Awards, and This Is My Joystick are up for two categories!

BOOM!

TIMJ partners up with Raptr!

We are proud to announce our upcoming partnership with everybody’s favourite gaming stat-tracking service, Raptr! The service, which has over 8 Million users tracking their stats across pretty much every gaming platform available, is launching some exciting new features starting from today, and we’re pleased to be able say that we’ll be a part of it.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from TIMJ!

It’s Christmas Eve! Work rates will have been dwindling worldwide this last week as everyone starts to wind down for the holidays. Suffice to say that TIMJ is no different, and you can expect updates to be fairly slow over the coming week.

We’re not closing down fully, though, as we have two excellent yearly review articles going live between Boxing Day and New Years Eve, so there’s still some of our excellent content to enjoy in the meantime.

We’ll be back with a vengeance in 2011, striving to do better, improving standards as we always have so that we can bring you some of the best opinionated content on the web. Not just that, though, it’s a year of change for the site, starting with an impressive redesign that we cannot wait to unleash. We’ll have the return of the podcasts, new features and more tricks up our sleeve to make sure you keep coming back for more.

Until then my friends, get merry, enjoy your holidays, have some quality gaming time and we’ll see you in 2011! Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at This Is My Joystick!

TIMJ at E3!

Yes! It’s true, TIMJ will really have a small presence at the biggest gaming expo on the planet. Thanks to the help of the ever industrious Neil, our list of firsts continues to grow as I’m pleased to announce that we’ll be sending young Jacob to the greatest show on earth.

Details of how we’ll be able to cover the proceedings have yet to be decided, after all we’re talking about one guy in a huge showroom, but we’ll have more news on the event closer to the time.

TIMJ is at the BAFTAs!

We were extremely fortunate last year that even after only being up and running for less than six months we were still able to get to cover a small number of pretty high profile gaming events. Now into 2010 that doesn’t look like changing. We are pleased to announce that our very own Bryony will be attending and covering this year’s GAME British Academy Video Games Awards this Friday! That’s right, we’re at the BAFTA’s baby!

What type of coverage is exactly yet to be decided, but rest assured we’ll be bringing you all the news from one of the industries big award shows.

Merry Christmas from TIMJ!

It’s that time of the year again… The time when I put aside my petty dislike of the holiday season, and wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas (‘annual gift day’ for my fellow atheists!), a Happy New Year, and happy gaming over the next few weeks.

While yes, as is the same with most websites of our ilk, you can probably expect us to be a little quieter than usual over the next week or so, but fear not; the site will be updated with fresh content as and when we can, just bear with us if it’s a little slow. Keep an eye out next week especially as we will be bringing you our own special take on a ‘Game of the year’ article.

It’s been an absolutely massive year for us; we’ve come so far in as little as six months. We’ve got more hits, readers and followers than we’d anticipated for this timescale, been to events that were unthinkable at the time of launch, and I’m very much thankful for the support we’ve received in that time.

Rest assured however, we will not resting on our laurels (or our Hardy’s). We have big things planned for next year as we look to take this entire operation up a gear. I hope you’ll stay with us as we continue to evolve.

Anyway, enough of the sentimentality; I’m off to put myself into a booze and gaming induced holiday coma.

From all of us here at This Is My Joystick; Happy Holidays!
