Golden Joysticks: Live Text (Closed!)
October 30, 2009, Author: Andy Corrigan
Hey guys, we figured that the best way to cover the Golden Joystick Awards would be to provide a live-text coverage of the event. All you’ll need to do is open this post, and keep refreshing every couple of minutes. We’ll update throughout the day, however the bulk of the updates will occur during the actual ceremony which begins at 13:45.
06:58: I’m leaving my hotel to go find the Hilton for registration! [Andy]
09:07: Just had an attempt to break the world speed record for beating Sonic 2 1-1. Epic fail, 40 seconds. James Richards is already a champion at it, and is trying to beat 22 seconds on 360, PS3, and Wii, it’s ridiculous. Seriously, just watched him make 22 seconds.
9:53: So far met Will Guyatt of Future, Justin Crosby from Boom!, and the lead guy from Guiness Book of Records Gamer Edition.
10:00: Oooooh Sarnies have arrived.
10:01: Neil will be tweeting, I’ll be covering this post adding pics when I can, so no more ‘[Andy]’s after these posts. [Andy]… DAMMIT!
10:16: News just in, James Richards has set the new record at 22 seconds. He comments:
“I’ve been training for weeks for this. Getting my mental preparation right has been just as important as honing my physical co-ordination and reactions. Lucozade Alert Plus has given me the energy boost I’ve needed to increase my focus, concentration and overall mental performance. I’m so happy to have broken the record – one that I hope will stand for some time to come!”
Go on then James, how much did they pay you?!
10:33: Future Q&A session has started!
11:16: Got good advice from the Future Publishing top dogs.
11:19: Just met Alan Boiston formally of X-League TV!
11:28: Just had a quick blast of Tekken 6. Really enjoyable, picture up in a sec.
11:35: Played as Kazuya, won a few rounds then passed the pad on. The game is out today. Has some cool environment interactions, such as cruelty to animals! Neil’s in deep conversation with Alan Boiston.
11:53: Me and Neil being cheesy (I don’t know what’s up with my left eye…):
12:08: Just waiting for the DJ Hero session to start!
12:19: Dee Dhanjal, senior remixer for DJ Hero, answering various questions. Getting a few questions from me as I used to DJ!
12:26: The DJ Hero controller. Awesome intro! Though I’ve just seen the flash advert for it on one of the guys laptops. David Guetta looks like a nob.
13:07: The game being played, hoping to grab a go shortly.
13:11: Alan Boiston is possibly the tallest person in London right now. Factoid.
13:14: I just asked how similar it was meant to be in concept to Scratch: The Ultimate DJ, seeing as that was a collaborative effort before legal tangles. Got a ‘no comment’. Don’t think that went down too well!
13:45: Just had a blast of DJ Hero, great fun.
13:46: The ceremony has started, the Future head honcho, Robert Price, is talking!
13:46: I have BEER! Oh and Sean Lock is about to start presenting!
13:47: Lock is having a jibe at gamers, and has made a cockney rhyming gag about bankers.
13:52: Sean Lock is on about the BNP, apparently they ain’t racist, they’re just fussy.
13:54: Oh forgot to say, we got an audio interview with Dee Dhanjal to go on our Golden Joystick special podcast.

14:52: So do you agree or disagree? We agree with about 20% of those. Damn you general public!
14:53: Alan Boiston has quite rightly pointed out that the soundtrack award was bollocks, it’s about ability at licensing tracks, not creating something new.
15:09: The award for the most foul tasting energy drink goes to…
15:21: Gonna record a quick podcast.
15:42: Just done a nine person round table podcast. Bit messy, but should be ok. We got filmed. Right, off to the after party for booze, and more booze. Will update as and when I can.
00:33: Hey guys, just got back to TIMJ towers in Bradford, finally can close this thing up. It’s been a great day for the site. Nay, a great WEEK for the site. Stay tuned for more Eurogamer Expo impressions, the special podcast from that (possibly the best we’ve done), a full Golden Joysticks write-up from Neil, and todays messy podcast.
Anyway, it’s late, I need sleep, so I don’t think I can leave you with anything else as awesome as this:
“I’ve been training for weeks for this. Getting my mental preparation right has been just as important as honing my physical co-ordination and reactions. Lucozade Alert Plus has given me the energy boost I’ve needed to increase my focus, concentration and overall mental performance. I’m so happy to have broken the record – one that I hope will stand for some time to come”
