“Road Rash Seems Like a Good Fit” – Criterion Hint at New Game

October 18, 2012, Author: Matt Parker

Yesterday Criterion spoke to the press to promote their newest title, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and they managed to gain a bit of attention.

The thing is, the attention wasn’t so much on their new game (which looks great, by the way) but on their next game. When creative director Craig Sullivan said the words;

“Road Rash seems like a good fit for Criterion.”

This caused the internet exploded and my wallet opened itself up.

I do want to take this opportunity to really express how interested I am in Criterion’s newest offering. Need for Speed: Most Wanted has managed to make racing games interesting to people who don’t normally like racing games. I am one of those people and I couldn’t be happier that the driving in this game focuses on action and not racing lines. This trailer should give you an idea of just why it is that I can’t wait.

Mr Sullivan was talking about the future for Criterion where he is quoted as saying;

“there’s still a lot we want to do with driving. We will make another Burnout game at some point. Obviously, as we’re working on Need for Speed we’re thinking of really good ideas that aren’t right for this series; there are ideas that we’re going to explore with Burnout.”

“When we did Burnout Paradise we did some motorbike DLC and now everyone thinks that we’re going to do a Road Rash game at some point. I had a lot of fun playing that game, we think bikes are fun. We might make a Road Rash game…But we might make a game without vehicles in it. I mean, we made Black, I was the lead designer – we might make a game about blowing the crap out of each other.”

“…but Road Rash seems like a good fit for Criterion.”

If there’s another developer out there that could do a better job of the Road Rash franchise, I can’t think of them. For once it seems that a small British developer getting swallowed up by EA won’t be such a bad thing after all. Thoughts on this? Drop a comment or chat in the forums!
