Lightning returns in a new Final Fantasy XIII title

September 1, 2012, Author: Ray Willmott

In an unprecedented movie for the franchise, Square Enix have revealed that a third game in the Fabula Nova Crystallis series will appear next year.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will conclude the story of Lightning on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in 2013. The announcement was made concurrently at PAX Prime and the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary event in Japan.

While we know little of the story, we understand that Lightning Returns is a whole new game rather than a continuation of FFXIII-2 and will conclude Lightning’s adventure as she has only thirteen days left until the Doomsday Clock obliterates the world.

Players will travel between four different islands via monorail travel and the world will have a day/night cycle.

Equally exciting is that players will be able to customize Lightning’s appearance and weapons. The game will feature lots of costume varieties, all of which will be adjustable in unique ways. Weapons will also be able to transform.

It was also announced that the game will feature some sort of Facebook integration, but we don’t know what that is yet. More details on the game will be revealed this Tuesday. Photography and filming was banned at the event, but we’ll almost certainly have more to share with you next week.

While it seems Versus XIII is no closer to fruition, we were told by Square Enix to wait just a little bit longer. We can all do that, right?

It was also announced that Japan will receive an incredible 25th Anniversary box set complete with all Final Fantasy games apart from X-2 and XIII-2, as well as unique artwork and music CD. The collection is exclusive to Playstation owners and will cost 35,000 Yen, which equates to around £280. No word on if this collection will ever make it to the West, but don’t hold your breath.

For more details on Lightning Returns, why not let the producer of the Final Fantasy series explain in his own way.
