Obsidian Kickstarter goes live then meets target in 24 hours

September 15, 2012, Author: Ray Willmott

Obsidian have made Kickstarter history with Project Eternity.

Obsidian’s next game, Project Eternity, has foregone the publisher route and will be funded entirely by Kickstarter. Last night, Obsidian put the page up, and within 24 hours the developer’s monetary target of $1.1 million was met.

Amazingly, the funding for the game does not seem to be showing any signs of slowing down. It currently has almost 25,000 backers.

Double Fine Adventure met its target in 8 hours, but that was a figure of $400,000.

Obsidian state that the reason they asked for so an amount is because they’re creating an entirely new world from scratch and want ‘do it right‘. It’s been Obsidian’s aim to create an epic PC RPG for years, but they’ve never had the money to make it possible.

Here’s the official blurb

Here’s the official blurb on the game:

“Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment.

“Combat uses a tactical real-time with pause system – positioning your party and coordinating attacks and abilities is one of the keys to success. The world map is dotted with unique locations and wilderness ripe for exploration and questing. You’ll create your own character and collect companions along the way – taking him or her not just through this story, but, with your continued support, through future adventures. You will engage in dialogues that are deep, and offer many choices to determine the fate of you and your party. …and you’ll experience a story that explores mature themes and presents you with complex, difficult choices to shape how your story plays out.”

There’s no word on a release date for Project Eternity, but it is set to pay homage to classics such as Icewind Dale and Baldur’s Gate.

The Kickstarter still has 31 days left, so you can still contribute to it here. There are various reward tiers available.

Obsidian have developed games such as Fallout: New Vegas, Knights of the Old Republic 2, Icewind Dale and the forthcoming South Park: The Stick of Truth
