Vita firmware update 1.80 is live!

August 28, 2012, Author: Ray Willmott, 2 Comments

The most significant Playstation Vita update so far is now available to download.

Prior to launch, one of the most anticipated features of Playstation Vita was the ability to play PSone games on the move. This is now possible thanks to today’s massive update. 100 PSone games are now playable on EU Vitas, and a rather underwhelming 9 on NA consoles (more will be added over time).

All hope isn’t lost for our American friends, however, as it appears some PS Bloggers have worked out that even more PSone games can be played on Vita if downloaded directly from your PS3 and transferred by the Content Manager Software. A full list of compatible titles hasn’t been determined yet

Excitingly, some of the biggest PSOne games are now playable on Playstation Vita, including Final Fantasy VIII, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Cool Boarders, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Rayman 2: The Great Escape and recently closed Studio Liverpool’s (formerly Psygnosis) gem, G-Police.

To date, the games are not still showing on the EU Store, and some have even complained that they’ve had to pay for the game a second time despite already owning it on PS3. Assumedly, these are teething problems and will be rectified over the next few days.

I’m sure you’ll agree, however, this update presents some amazing portable opportunities.

In addition to a wealth of PS1 games, the update also allows users to navigate the Vita Home Screen using the buttons, and the ability to use touch screen controls in compatible PSP games.

A full list of compatible PSone games is available from the link below.

UPDATE: We’ve received word that PSone games won’t appear on the Vita store until tomorrow. More on this as it develops. Also, to transfer titles between PS3 and Vita, you need make sure you have the PS1 game installer downloaded but not installed. Thanks to @Reidfeed for the information

Downloaded the update and put my PS1 games on but found one massive issue. When you set the screen to full view rather than standard it puts it in a wide screen letterbox mode with a gap at the top and bottom, rather than filling the whole screen. tried this with a few games and they all do the same. That's something that needs to be fixed. Its also a little on the slow side for loading some stuff, like initially when loading the game or when loading the memory card it takes longer than the PSP would. With the power that console is packing, it should be instant... well you would think. The only other annoyance is the back touch pad that is used with R2 and L2 functions... just be careful not to put your finger on there or you may be pressing buttons that you really didn't want to.

Installs are pretty simple though and I had no issue what so ever of installing FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX. Its just a shame that little stuff kinda let it down a bit, not that it doesn't work, just could have been implemented a bit better. Sony have rushed things out a bit, with demand being high for the update, maybe they thought that they would gain more revenue from the system by solidifying what it is capable of.

Happy its here; disappointed that its just not that perfect at all.
