Eiji Aonuma announces HD Wind Waker remake

Originally splitting opinions at release due to its ground-breaking, cell-shaded look, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker eventually won its critics over, and is now regarded as one of the series’ most beautiful and retrospectively loved entries.

It’s set to become even more beautiful, however, as Eiji Aonuma has announced via Nintendo Direct that a HD remake will hit the Wii U this “Fall”.

That’s autumn for the Brits…

According to Aonuma, the move to port this particular Zelda game to Wii U came about because a brand new Zelda game is “going to take some time to complete”, so they wanted to “offer [you] The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, reborn on Wii U, to play in the meantime”.

Prior to the announcement, however, Aonuma also hinted that the all-new Zelda game could change up the formula a little, deciding that they want to “re-think the conventions of Zelda”, specifically mentioning the need to complete dungeons in a certain order and playing by ourselves as things they want to “set aside”.

Interesting.

As a Zelda fan myself, I’m hugely excited to see one of the most divisive entries in the series make that transition to HD. It’s an announcement that’s furthered my resolve to pick up a Wii U in the near future.
